You're going to find that if you check in your bags at the airport, or even bring a carry on, you're never going to be safe from losing your luggage! whether it's person stealing it, or its an airline mistakes, heres what you can do.

Watch your valuables: If you can, leave the valuables at home. When you're packing up your luggage, you're going to have to ask yourself, "Will I care if I lose this?" Try and keep it minute to your clothes, as well as a few others things. Refrain from putting in jewelry and more. Get a luggage lock: If you're going to get a lock, make sure that it's Tsa approved. There's going to be a good chance that they are going to rummage straight through your bags, so make sure that you're getting something that they can break open. A lock can help a little, but if person wants to get in, they are going to find a way, trust me. Luggage tags: This is going to bring me to my last point. You're going to want to get some sort of luggage label. whether you get a leather tag, a plastic tag, or maybe you engrave your name right on the bag, you're going to want to have your name, address, as well as phone number on there. By having this, if person finds your bag, you're going to find that they may call you, or great yet, they are going to know who the bag belongs to.
